Understanding When Your Car Battery Needs Replacement

ProAuto  •  Aug 15 2024 09:00

A car battery that dies in January in a Chicago suburb is more than an inconvenience — it's a problem. And in most cases, the battery gave signs well before the final failure.

How long batteries last

The typical car battery lasts 3–5 years. In harsher climates — like the Chicago area, where batteries experience both extreme cold in winter and significant heat in summer — 3–4 years is more realistic. Cold weather is particularly hard on batteries: it reduces the battery's ability to produce current at the same time that cold-soaked engines require more cranking power to start.

Signs the battery is going

Slow cranking when you start the engine. Needing a jump start once, then the car seems fine. Lights that dim noticeably when you start the car. An interior light or headlight that drains the battery after a short parking period. These are the patterns to pay attention to. Any of them is worth a test.

The load test vs. just checking voltage

A resting voltage check tells you if the battery is currently holding a charge. It doesn't tell you if it can actually deliver current under load, which is what matters when you're starting the engine. A load test simulates the current draw of starting and measures how the battery performs under real-world conditions. This is the test that catches a battery that "passes" voltage but is actually marginal.

At ProAuto, we run a load test during your oil change if your battery is more than three years old. It takes a few minutes and tells you with confidence whether the battery is healthy or approaching the end of its life.

What to expect during replacement

Modern vehicles have computers and memory systems that rely on constant battery power. When you disconnect the battery, some of these need to relearn or recalibrate — power window positions, radio presets, idle calibration, and on some vehicles, the throttle body. This is normal and expected. We handle this properly during replacement.

The replacement battery should match the group size and cold cranking amps (CCA) specified for your vehicle. Using a battery with lower CCA than required means you're back to a marginal situation in cold weather.

When to act

Don't wait for the battery to die completely. A stranded car costs you a tow, a lockout if needed, and a lot of time. If your battery is four years old and you're heading into fall, test it. If it's borderline, replace it now rather than in February.
