The Importance of a Comprehensive Safety Check For Your Car
ProAuto • Feb 19 2025 09:00
A thorough vehicle safety inspection is different from a quick oil change visual check. It's a systematic evaluation of every major system that affects your ability to control the vehicle, stop it, and keep everyone in it safe. Here's what it covers and why each part matters.
Brakes
The most critical safety system on your vehicle. A full brake inspection includes measuring pad thickness on all four corners, checking rotor condition and measuring thickness against minimum spec, inspecting caliper function and hardware, checking brake fluid level and condition, and inspecting brake hoses and hard lines for corrosion or damage. On older vehicles in the Chicago area, brake line corrosion from road salt is a real concern — not just the pads and rotors.
Tires
Tread depth on all four tires (and spare if applicable), sidewall condition, inflation pressure, and wear pattern. Uneven wear is important — it tells a story about alignment, suspension, and inflation history. A tire with 6/32 tread in the center and 2/32 on the inside edge needs alignment attention, not just replacement.
Steering and suspension
Worn suspension components — ball joints, tie rod ends, bushings, struts — affect handling, alignment, and stability. In severe cases, it can cause loss of control. A safety inspection includes checking for loose or worn suspension components, typically by putting the car on a lift and checking for play and wear in the steering linkage and suspension mounts.
Lights and electrical
All exterior lighting — headlights (low and high beam), brake lights, taillights, turn signals, reverse lights, and hazard lights. A non-functional brake light is a rear-end collision waiting to happen, and a police stop you don't need.
Fluid levels and condition
Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid (if applicable), and transmission fluid. Low fluid levels are symptoms — the question is why they're low.
Belts and hoses
Serpentine belt condition and tension. Coolant hoses for cracking, swelling, or soft spots. These are failure points that leave you stranded if they go.
Underbody condition
In the Midwest, salt corrosion on the undercarriage is a legitimate safety concern on older vehicles. Severely corroded brake lines, fuel lines, or frame components can fail. A visual underbody inspection on a lift is the only way to see what's there.
When to get one
Before buying a used vehicle. Before a long road trip. When you're unsure of the maintenance history on a car you've had for a while. When you buy a used car from a private seller, a pre-purchase inspection at a shop that doesn't have a financial stake in you buying the car is one of the best $75–150 you can spend.
At ProAuto, we do safety inspections and pre-purchase inspections. We'll give you a complete picture of what we find and honest guidance on what needs immediate attention versus what can wait.
