The Benefits of Scheduled Oil Change Maintenance

ProAuto  •  Aug 12 2024 09:00

If there's one service that pays for itself more reliably than any other, it's the oil change. Not because it's expensive — it's not — but because what it prevents is.

Here's what's actually happening inside your engine, and why clean oil matters.

Lubrication

Your engine has hundreds of metal components moving against each other thousands of times per minute. Oil creates a thin film between those surfaces that prevents direct metal-to-metal contact. As oil ages, it breaks down. The film thins. Surfaces that should be separated begin to wear against each other. That wear is cumulative and irreversible.

Heat management

Your engine produces enormous heat, and the cooling system handles a lot of it — but oil absorbs heat from components the coolant never reaches, like the crankshaft bearings and the underside of the pistons. Old oil doesn't transfer heat as efficiently, which means internal engine temperatures run higher than they should.

Keeping the engine clean

Fresh oil contains detergents and additives that suspend contaminants — combustion byproducts, metal particles, condensation — and carry them to the oil filter. Over time, those additives are depleted. Contaminants start to drop out of suspension and accumulate as sludge. Sludge blocks oil passages, starves components of lubrication, and is very difficult to clean out once it forms. The engines we see with sludge problems are engines that went long periods without oil changes.

Fuel economy

Clean oil flows more easily through the engine and reduces friction. That means your engine converts more of the fuel it burns into power and movement, rather than overcoming internal resistance. The effect isn't dramatic, but over time and miles it adds up.

The actual cost math

A conventional oil change is $35–60 at most shops. A full synthetic change is $70–110. An engine rebuild or replacement is $3,000–$10,000 or more depending on the vehicle. The math makes this decision easy.

At ProAuto, we check more than just your oil when you come in — we look at all fluid levels, tire pressure, and visible condition of components under the hood. If we see something worth noting, we'll tell you. If everything looks fine, we'll tell you that too.
