Immediate Repairs: When to Seek Help from Your Mechanic
ProAuto • Apr 16 2025 09:00
Most car maintenance follows a pretty forgiving schedule. Oil changes, tire rotations, air filters — there's usually some room to push them a few weeks without serious consequences.
Some things don't work that way.
Here are the issues our mechanics at ProAuto treat as urgent — the ones where driving on them risks making a minor problem catastrophic, or where safety is directly at stake.
Brake failure symptoms
A spongy pedal, a pedal that sinks to the floor, or a car that pulls hard to one side when braking are hydraulic brake system symptoms. You may still be stopping, but you don't have full brake performance, and the margin is gone. Don't drive on these.
Coolant temperature warning
Your engine has a very narrow temperature range in which it operates safely. Once it overheats — and the temperature gauge or warning light is telling you it's getting there — you're minutes away from head gasket damage, warped cylinder heads, or a seized engine. Pull over. Let it cool. Don't try to make it to the shop.
Oil pressure warning light
Not the oil life reminder. The oil pressure warning — usually red, looks like an oil can. This means your engine is not getting adequate oil pressure right now. Driving on this destroys engine bearings quickly. Stop the engine as soon as it's safe to do so.
Grinding when turning
A grinding or clicking sound that happens specifically when turning — especially at low speed in parking lots — often indicates a failing CV axle. A CV axle that fails completely can leave you without drive to the wheel. On front-wheel-drive vehicles, it can also affect your steering.
Steering that feels suddenly different
If your power steering suddenly becomes heavy, or if the steering wheel pulls unpredictably, something has changed in a system you depend on for vehicle control. Get it checked before your next highway drive.
Smoke of any color
White smoke from the exhaust (especially when warm) usually means coolant burning. Blue smoke means oil burning. Steam from under the hood means coolant is escaping — overheating. None of these are things to monitor and hope improve.
Flashing check engine light
A steady check engine light is worth investigating, but it's often something that can be diagnosed at your next scheduled appointment. A flashing or blinking check engine light indicates an active misfire — combustion failures that are sending raw fuel into the catalytic converter. This damages the catalytic converter (expensive) and needs to be addressed promptly.
If you're experiencing any of these, call us or come in. We'll get you in the same day if at all possible.
