Fluid Inspection: Why It’s Essential for Your Vehicle's Longevity

ProAuto  •  Feb 05 2025 09:00

Your car has six or more fluid systems, and each one degrades over time. Most of them don't warn you until something is already wrong. Here's a plain-English breakdown of each fluid, what it does, and when it needs attention.

Engine oil

The one most people know. Oil lubricates the engine's moving parts, manages heat, and carries contaminants to the filter. It degrades through use and needs regular replacement. Interval depends on the oil type and your driving conditions — full synthetic typically lasts 7,500–10,000 miles under normal use.

Engine coolant (antifreeze)

Coolant keeps your engine within its operating temperature range in both extreme heat and extreme cold. It also contains corrosion inhibitors that protect aluminum and metal components in the cooling system. Those inhibitors deplete over time — degraded coolant becomes acidic and eats at hoses, the radiator, and the water pump. Most manufacturers recommend a flush every 30,000–50,000 miles.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid transmits the pressure you apply at the pedal to the brake calipers at each wheel. It's hydraulic — meaning it's nearly incompressible under pressure, which is what makes your brakes responsive. The problem is that brake fluid is hygroscopic. It absorbs moisture from the air over time, and as the moisture content increases, its boiling point drops. Every 2–3 years is a reasonable service interval.

Transmission fluid

Automatic transmission fluid lubricates the transmission's complex internal components and serves as hydraulic fluid for its operation. It degrades with heat and use. The interval varies widely by vehicle — some manufacturers specify 30,000 miles, others claim sealed transmissions are "lifetime" fill (which is often optimistic). If your transmission shifts roughly or hesitates, or you notice a burnt smell, a fluid condition is worth checking.

Power steering fluid

Most modern vehicles have electric power steering and don't use power steering fluid. Older vehicles with hydraulic systems do. The fluid degrades, and the system can develop leaks — low fluid results in heavy, difficult steering.

Windshield washer fluid

This one doesn't wear out in the same way, but it does matter seasonally. Summer washer fluid can freeze in your lines and reservoir in Illinois winters. Switch to a winter formulation rated for temperatures well below freezing before cold weather arrives.

How often should you check?

Once a month is a reasonable habit for oil level. The others can be checked quarterly or whenever you're in for service. At ProAuto, we check fluid levels and visible condition during every service visit and flag anything that looks off.
