Child Car Seat Winter Safety: Tips for Parents

Winter Car Seat Safety: What Every Parent Needs to Know

Winter in the Chicago area means road salt, icy intersections, and the instinct to bundle your kids up in the thickest coat you can find before strapping them in. That instinct makes sense — but when it comes to car seats, bulky winter gear is actually one of the most common safety mistakes parents make.

Here's what you need to know before the cold really sets in.

The Coat Problem

This is the big one. A puffy winter coat looks like it's keeping your child snug in their car seat, but in a crash, that padding compresses instantly — sometimes down to almost nothing. What was a snug harness suddenly has inches of slack, and a loose harness can't do its job.

Think of it this way: squeeze a puffer coat between your hands. See how flat it gets? That's what happens under crash forces. The harness doesn't tighten back up in time.

The fix is simple: don't put your child in the car seat while wearing a thick winter coat.

What to Do Instead

Thin layers work better than one big coat — and your child will actually be just as warm.

Start with a snug thermal base layer, add a fleece or thin zip-up, and buckle them in. Once they're secured, lay their coat over them like a blanket, or use a car seat poncho (designed to go over the harness, not under it). Blankets over a buckled child are always fine.

The harness should sit against their body — not over a coat.

The Pinch Test

After buckling your child in, do this every time: pinch the harness webbing at the shoulder. If you can pinch any slack, it's too loose. You shouldn't be able to grab a fold of the strap.

This takes about two seconds and tells you immediately whether the harness is doing its job.

Warm Up Your Car First

A practical tip that makes this whole system easier: warm up your car for a few minutes before loading the kids. When the interior is already warm, your child doesn't need heavy gear to be comfortable, and you're not fighting the clock to get them buckled before the cold gets to them. On these North Shore winters, that few minutes matters.

A Quick Checklist Before Winter Drives

  • No bulky coats under the harness — thin layers only
  • Coat or blanket goes over the buckled harness
  • Run the pinch test every single time
  • Warm the car before loading up
  • Check that the harness hasn't loosened over time — cold can affect materials

If you're ever unsure whether your car seat is installed correctly or want a second set of eyes before a long winter drive, our team at ProAuto on Dempster is happy to take a look. No appointment necessary for a quick check — that's just what neighbors do.
