Brake Inspection: Signs Your Brakes Need Attention

ProAuto  •  Mar 05 2025 09:00

Here's the most common brake story we hear at ProAuto: "The squealing started a few months ago, but the car seemed fine, so I waited." By the time they came in, the rotors were damaged, and what would have been a straightforward pad replacement had become a pad-and-rotor job.

Brakes give you warning signs on purpose. The metal wear indicators built into brake pads squeal specifically to get your attention. The warning window between "needs pads" and "needs pads AND rotors" is real but finite. Once the pad material is gone and metal is grinding on metal, you're past it.

The warning sign sequence

It typically goes like this:

Squealing — wear indicators are contacting the rotor. You need pads. Rotors may still be fine depending on their condition and remaining thickness.

Grinding — pad material is gone. Metal-to-metal contact. Rotors are being damaged with every stop. What was a $200 job is now $400–600.

Vibration or pulsing under braking — usually warped rotors, often the result of the above. Rotors that can't be resurfaced need to be replaced.

Soft or spongy pedal — hydraulic issue. Something has changed in the brake fluid or lines. Not a "wait and see" situation.

Car pulls when braking — stuck caliper or uneven pad wear. Creates handling unpredictability and accelerates wear on one side.

The cost comparison

Brake pads on most common vehicles: $150–250 per axle, including labor.

Pads and rotors on the same axle because you waited: $350–600.

A caliper replacement because a stuck caliper got ignored: add another $200–400.

The math is simple. Catching it early is cheaper. The squealing is telling you to catch it early.

How often should you have your brakes inspected

Once a year is a reasonable baseline for most drivers. More often if you're putting on significant mileage, towing, or have a heavier vehicle. Most brake inspections at ProAuto take about 20 minutes, and we'll give you a straightforward report on where each corner stands.
