10 Essential Car Maintenance Tips from ProAuto

ProAuto  •  May 25 2024 09:00

Most serious car problems have a history. A blown gasket wasn't a random event — it was oil that ran low for too long. A failed transmission wasn't bad luck — it was fluid that was never changed. A dead battery on a cold Tuesday morning wasn't a surprise — it was a battery that was showing signs for six months.

The best car maintenance isn't complicated. It's mostly just showing up. Here are the ten habits that make the biggest difference.

1. Change your oil on schedule — and use the right oil

This is still the single most impactful maintenance you can do. Modern full synthetic oils last longer than conventional, but they don't last forever. Follow your manufacturer's recommendation for interval and viscosity. Running the wrong viscosity — especially something thicker than specified in modern engines — can reduce fuel economy and accelerate wear.

2. Check tire pressure monthly

Tires lose about 1 PSI per month under normal conditions, and more in cold weather. Underinflated tires wear faster, handle worse, and reduce fuel economy. The correct pressure is on the sticker inside your driver's door — not the number molded into the tire sidewall, which is the maximum.

3. Rotate your tires every 5,000–7,500 miles

Front and rear tires wear at different rates based on weight distribution and whether your vehicle is front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive. Rotation extends the life of a full set of tires significantly. If you're getting oil changes at the right interval, asking for a rotation at the same time is an easy habit.

4. Replace the air filter when it's dirty

A clogged air filter makes your engine work harder for the same output — worse power and worse fuel economy. Check it when you change your oil. A paper filter is usually $15–25; if it's gray and dirty, it's doing its job and ready to be replaced.

5. Have your brakes inspected annually

Brake pad life varies widely depending on driving style, vehicle weight, and pad compound. You don't need to wait for squealing — have the thickness checked once a year and you'll always know where you stand.

6. Flush your brake fluid every 2–3 years

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture over time. As it absorbs water, its boiling point drops — which means less performance under hard braking and potential fade. A flush every 2–3 years is cheap insurance.

7. Replace wiper blades before you need them in a storm

Worn wiper blades are a clear visibility hazard. They're also inexpensive and easy to replace. If your wipers are leaving streaks, chattering, or skipping, they're ready to go.

8. Check your coolant level and condition

Coolant doesn't just prevent freezing — it prevents boiling and protects your engine from corrosion. Coolant degrades over time and needs to be flushed and replaced on schedule (typically every 30,000–50,000 miles, depending on the type). Running old, acidic coolant eats away at seals and aluminum components.

9. Test your battery before winter

Chicago winters are hard on batteries. A battery that starts fine in October may not start in January. A load test takes a few minutes and tells you the actual health of the battery — not just whether it's currently holding charge. If it's more than four or five years old, test it before cold season every year.

10. Don't ignore warning lights

Every dashboard warning light is communicating something specific. A slow-blinking check engine light might be an emissions sensor that can wait. A fast-blinking check engine light often means a misfire that needs attention quickly to avoid damaging your catalytic converter. A coolant temperature warning needs to be addressed immediately. If a light comes on and you're not sure what it means, get it scanned — most shops will do this quickly for free.

What all of this has in common

None of these habits require you to be a mechanic. They just require some regular attention and a shop you trust to be straight with you. At ProAuto, we check all of these items during every oil change and flag what we see — without turning it into an upsell conversation.
